...about identity

Today (Jan 10, 2008) when I was walking down the Residency road in Bangalore from LIC building towards Brigade Road, around 7PM late evening. I walked, till I reached the signal touching St' Marks road, on the one side you have the St’ Joseph’s college and on the other you have sacred heart school. At the corner, facing sacred heart school, immediately striking my neuro-sensitive receptors was a girl standing at the signal, barely dressed? In a fraction of a second, my inner mind (very judgemental) told the outer mind that, she is a whore. And outer mind refused to accept for a while, and then succumbed to the pressure. The inner mind was more natural and conveyed what it saw and outer mind, trying to pretend and making a remark that, no; she is not! And I brisked past signal and kept going straight! But when I was about to take a right turn, some thing really started brewing up in my mind? Is she really a whore? Is she not? What is the identity she keeps for herself and perhaps for others (potential clients). If she is a whore and that’s the identity she wanted to keep for herself, how’s she communicating that identity to the external world, who are new to her. Is it by giving away something she possess? Is it by not giving away? For a second, I thought, it was by revealing what she posseses to the world around her, and not by selfishly keeping it to herself.

But the question is? Is identity gets created by giving away your valuable possessions? Or is it by holding onto it? What’s it? This was the thought that nabbed me for while on that evening.
